We take the environment into account when we develop and formulate our products

Responsible product development

We are committed to minimising the environmental impact of our business. For us, this starts in the earliest stages of the product lifecycle, with the ingredients we select to use in our formulations, and where and how we source them. We consciously formulate our products with environmental impact top of mind, including formulating our rinse-off products to be biodegradable.

Our commitment extends to our focus on green science, which enables us to find new ways of reducing our impact during the product development and manufacturing processes. And it includes reducing the impact of our packaging, both during production and when disposed of by our consumers.

At Oriflame, we take pride in creating quality Swedish products that are thoughtfully designed and developed with a clear philosophy focused on three key perspectives:

Performing
Backed by science with proven results and benefits

Safe

Adhering to the strictest safety standards and beyond

Responsible

Committed to reducing impact on the planet and society

More sustainable packaging

We’re working to find new ways to improve our packaging and reduce our impact on the environment.

Natural-origin ingredients

We strive to use natural-origin ingredients where possible. For example, our alcohol ingredients are derived from fermented grains, and we use natural-origin scrubs in our exfoliating products.

Ingredient rationale

Our experts rigorously review each new ingredient for safety, performance, sustainability, environmental impact, ethical considerations and traceability.

Proactive approach

We stay informed on the latest scientific reports and discussions regarding environmental issues. This enables us to be proactive and phase out ingredients with potential negative impacts.

Innovation and green science

Innovation is at the heart of our product development. Our focus on green science helps us reduce our climate impact and discover new sustainable solutions. Examples include upcycled waste from the juicing industry, such as apple seed extract in our Tender Care and Green Apple Multi-Purpose Balm, and developing natural-origin bioactivating technologies in our Novage+ range.

Ethical ingredient sourcing

We always consider the ethical impact of our ingredient sourcing and in some cases, we choose an alternative ingredient to avoid conflict concerns. For instance, we use synthetic diamond powder instead of natural diamond powder in our formulations. For critical ingredients like palm oil and mica, we partner with credible organisations to ensure responsible sourcing.

Sustainability in packaging

We also drive sustainability across our packaging by increasing recycled content, using less material,
designing for recyclability, and developing refill options.

Recycled materials

We aim to use recycled materials where technically feasible and plan to increase the amount we use over time. We have various levels of recycled plastic, up to 100% recycled plastic in some bottles.

Recyclability

We strive to make our packaging recyclable, so it can be disposed of responsibly where recycling facilities are available.

Refills

We’re increasing our use of refill pouches in certain personal and hair care ranges.

Reduced material

We’re reducing the materials used to make selected product packages. This allows to us to reduce weight compared to previous packaging.

Responsible formulation and packaging

Natural-origin ingredients

In 2024, we expanded our use of natural-origin ingredients like adaptogens, upcycled extracts, and organic extracts across new launches, including Wellosophy, Feminelle, and Tender Care Balms.

Circular approach

We launched Love Nature Up-Loved range, with upcycled extracts from the food industry – lemon, apple seed and banana flower. We also launched reusable skincare accessories, such as eye gel pads, serum and mask covers, cotton pads and more..

Tonnes of virgin plastic and glass spared

In 2024, we used more than 575 tonnes of recycled plastic, glass and metal in the packaging of products we sold. This reduced the volume of virgin materials we put on the market and lowered our carbon emissions by 602 tonnes.

Lighter packaging

In 2024, we took significant steps to minimise waste and reduce the climate impact of our products by decreasing the weight of our packaging. These lightweight packaging initiatives enabled us to reduce our packaging material usage by 48 tonnes over the year.

Formulation and Packaging

Our product formulations have an environmental impact during production, as well as during and following consumer usage. If not responsibly formulated, they may have a long-term impact on people and ecosystems both up and downstream in our value chain. This is why we need to take the right decisions regarding which ingredients we select as part of the formulation development.

Our product packaging has an environmental impact, both during production and disposal, and can contribute to the pollution of land and waterbodies downstream in our value chain, affecting ecosystems and local communities, including their human rights.
